Previewing UTA and No. 21 Baylor PDF Print E-mail

Looking at the Mavericks' record (4-4) so far this season, it would seem as though they are underachieving in comparison to last year's school record 21 wins and starting last year at 8-0.

Right now, this tam is still searching for an identity after being a team, last year, with big contributions from the inside.

During warmups, I briefly spoke with junior guard Marquez Haynes and he said that this week of practice was the best the team has had all year. He also said they were down after the two loses in Montana, but there is a lot of confidence with this team.

They're going to need to ride that high they feel because they have a tall task coming against the No. 21-ranked Baylor Bears (8-1), who have won their last two games.

Last year, even after losing guard Brandon Long to a season-long injury, the Mavs came up short against Big 12 member Oklahoma State (69-64). Let's see if the team has that same intensity it did then.

Haynes also said Baylor runs the same style offense the Mavs do, in which case we could see a lot of points here at the Ferrell Center.

Baylor comes into the game with five players averaging double digits, led by its sixth man sophomore guard LaceDarius Dun at 16.9 points per game.

Bear opponents are averaging only 61.3 points per game while Baylor averages 82.2 points per game, shooting 48.9 percent from the floor.

To win, Haynes, Long and Rogér Guignard have to hit their shots, forward Anthony Vereen will have to play similar to the way he did against Memphis last season. UTA will also need to get more production from its other forwards in Jordan Kinnear, Trey Parker and Ishmael Awange.

"We feel good about this one," Haynes said just before starting warmups.

This is the 12th meeting between the schools, Baylor holds a 10-1 record against the Mavericks. UTA is also 0-15 all-time against ranked opponents. This is the first regular season meeting against a ranked opponent since 2005 when they played then No. 2 Texas, losing 93-55.
