Slumdog millionaire

Starring: Dev Patel, Frieda Pinto
Director: Danny Boyle
2 out of 5 stars
Slumdog Millionaire takes a cliché, rags-to-riches story and creates an ambitious and gorgeously exhilarating film — one of the best of the year.

One question away from winning the jackpot on India’s “Who Wants to be a Millionaire,” Jamal (Dev Patel) gets arrested on suspicion of cheating.

The police don’t believe a poor teen from Mumbai slums knows the answers, so he tells them about his adventurous childhood to prove his innocence and his knowledge of the answers.

But not for the money, he only wants Latika (Frieda Pinto), his childhood sweetheart turned love-of-his-life, to see him on the television.

The entire movie zips through Jamal’s life — one minute deep in his childhood, reading Hindi subtitles; the next, backstage at the popular show — but it never loses focus or heart.

Though Jamal encounters harrowing aspects of slum culture, like the blinding of children so they can get more money begging, despite this the movie keeps an inspiring and jovial tone throughout.

That is the beauty of this film — even in the darkest corners of Jamal’s memories, there lies a layer of exuberance.

Slumdog Millionaire always uplifts and makes the au The music surges throughout the movie almost like another character — colorful, charismatic and unable to miss.

The best scenes revolve around the beautiful soundtrack.

Patel and Pinto are pitch-perfect. Jamal has the right nuance of reality, never a stereotype, just a normal Joe with an extraordinary eventful life.

Pinto is cute as a button and moviegoers root for the two to get together. No other film shines as beautifully this winter as Slumdog Millionaire.
