University students and faculty can help the less fortunate by adopting their very own angel. Located in the University Center basement room 140, the campus community can visit the Salvation Army Angel tree and choose from around 65 “angels” or children, whose parents can’t afford Christmas gifts, with ages ranging from 8 months to 14 years old. Each child lists items he or she wants or needs. Some of the things that an angel might need would be a pair of jeans or a jacket, Susann Asebedo said, Student Affairs administrative assistant to the vice president. The children might want action figures, baby dolls, an MP3 player, or Barbies — basically things that aren’t too extravagant, she also said. “At first, I was really worried that people might not want to participate because of the economy, … but it hasn’t affected people’s ability to help,” she said. If an angel doesn’t get adopted, they might not receive anything for the holidays, she said. On the angel tree wish-lists, clothing sizes and other information about the child can help those unsure of what to get for their angel. Participants don’t have a minimum or maximum to spend on their angels, and can drop their items back to the angel tree by Dec. 4 where they will be delivered to the Salvation Army.
