The party on the Central Library mall will feature a tree lighting, live music and photo opportunities with Santa Claus.

Students who feel as though they don’t fit into the campus community can find a sense of belonging and capture the university spirit at the 18th annual Holiday Celebration, one organizer says.

The celebration, hosted by EX.C.E.L. Campus Activities, is planned today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the Central Library mall and is scheduled to feature guest speakers, a tree lighting, live music from the 3 Mile High Jazz Band and Voices of Christ Choir, ornament design, refreshments and even pictures with jolly Ol’ Saint Nick himself.

The Holiday Celebration promotes campus brotherhood and unity, one organizer said.

Seth Ressl, service learning coordinator, said everyone is invited.

“This is a university tradition and it gives individuals an opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate the holiday season,” he said.

Ressl said changing the festivities’ location will bring individuals closer together, literally.

“The big difference between last year’s celebration and this year’s is that the whole program will be held outside instead of inside of the Palo Duro Lounge,” he said.

Students can also make donations at art supplies, books and clothing drive locations in University Hall, the University Center and the Activities Building.

Nam Xiong, EX.C.E.L. campus community service student director, said she encourages people to donate.

“Donating gives people a chance to give back to those less fortunate. The holidays are known for acts of giving but we should help others, not just during the season, but all of the time, and as often as we can,” she said.

EX.C.E.L. President Meg McIntyre said the Holiday Celebration promotes a family element and an atmosphere of togetherness.

“Students can sing songs, meet new people and spend time with their campus family. Any time you can incorporate community service with annual events, it’s beneficial because people do care and want to show support,” she said.
