Members of African-American sororities and fraternities practice weeks and months in advance for the second annual Jam B4 U Cram stepshow.
The history and pre-law senior has stepped only once in front of a large crowd — at last year’s show. She’ll occupy the stage with six of her Delta Sigma Theta sorority sisters at today’s stepshow. The National Pan-Hellenic Council will sponsor the event, which will provide a chance for students to relax before final exams. It is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the University Center Rosebud Theatre, and a $5 donation will be accepted at the door for admission. Three sororities and four fraternities are expected to perform, and a mixer will be held in the UC Rio Grande Ballroom after the show. Members of the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority practiced two weeks in advance for the event, said Olivia Hunt, criminal justice and criminology senior. “We’re doing something different. We have a surprise,” she said. The Alpha Phi Alpha, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma and Omega Delta Phi fraternities are expected to stomp, and members of the Zeta Phi Beta sorority also are expected to perform. After each organization has performed, they will come together and perform a step routine. Sha’tu Dailey, the National Pan-Hellenic Council president, said she expects about 300 attendees for the event, and proceeds will benefit the council. “It’s a fund-raiser for NPHC, but it’s also something to get the campus involved with the Greeks,” she said. Peterson said that after practicing over and over, she thinks she’s ready for the show. Her sorority members practiced a month in advance. “Once you drill and drill it in your head, there’s nothing to worry about,” she said. But no matter how hard you practice, things still can go wrong. Last year, the group that performed before Peterson’s group had technical problems, she said. She said she became very nervous after that. She remembered how large the crowd was the stepshow’s first year. “Hopefully, we’ll have a turnout like that this year,” she said.
