Student Congress has generated a surprisingly large number of resolutions this semester. According to SC Vice President Kate Gadberry, there are currently more resolutions under consideration than she has ever seen at any one time before. Issues from parking reforms at Centennial Court Apartments, to smoking around buildings, to constituency council attendance are being considered. We decided to weigh in on some issues that haven’t gotten much attention yet. Below are our opinions on six resolutions before Student Congress.

Social Security Number Reform: This resolution would give students greater flexibility to use a number other than their Social Security Number as a student ID number. We support this. The Shorthorn has already brought up the need for such reform. While it is currently possible for students to use a number besides their Social Security Numbers, this resolution would better inform students and make the process easier.

Visitor Parking Centennial Court Style: This resolution would create an allotment of 15 visitor parking spots at Centennial Court Apartments. This is a good idea. The way the resolution is worded, however, it seems that all 15 spots may end up being next to each other. We think it would be better if the 15 spots were spread throughout the complex.

How’s it Hanging and Make Some Room: The first resolution would call for the installation of permanent brackets around campus for groups to post fliers and announcements around campus. The second resolution would create more space for organizations to post those fliers and announcements. These are good ideas, and could hopefully help make the campus more lively. As well as just in the University Center, congress should also push for more posting space west of Cooper Street.

CC Involvement, Part Deux: This is a completely reasonable attempt to improve attendance at constituency council meetings. The resolution calls for the posting of all senators’ constituency council meeting attendance records on the Student Governance Association’s bulletin board.

Office of Admissions — Student Tour Guides & Orientation Leaders: This would require student tour guides and tour leaders to meet the same dress code requirements as UTA ambassadors. We support this. Tour and orientation leaders often provide prospective students’ first impression of UTA, and that should be a good impression.

Suggestions: This is another easy resolution to support — it would call for a suggestion box to be set up near the Student Congress Association’s bulletin board for all students to make suggestions. We hope it passes.
