The Engineering Research Building groundbreaking begins at 4:30 today on the land north of Nedderman Hall. The ceremony is invitation-only for engineering and science faculty. The 230,000-square-foot, $116 million building will hold state-of-the-art labs, classrooms, offices and conference rooms. Jeff Howard, President’s Sustainability Committee co-chair, said the building is registered to receive a silver LEED certification. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a nationally accepted third-party certification program for construction and operation of sustainable buildings. “For example, it will use lots of natural daylight,” Howard said. “It is built oriented to the sun so that every room in the main part of the building will be lit by daylight primarily, except on a cloudy day, in which case the lights will come up.” Howard said green roofs, a sunlight reflective roof, and sunshades on the building’s south side will help keep the building temperature down and save energy costs. Underground water tanks will capture rainwater and condensation from the cooling system and recycle it into the irrigation system. Views: 992 | E-mail
