Information

The Environmental Society’s inaugural meeting is open to everyone and begins at 2:15 p.m. Sept. 8 in Room 101 College Hall.

Going green might have gotten a little bit easier, thanks in part to a new organization on campus.

The Environmental Society plans to promote environmental interests among students, group president Lindsey Coddington said.

The idea for the group first started in a Bio Ethics class last semester following a presentation on ecology.

ES faculty sponsor Tim Henry said it started when students in class asked themselves why they weren’t doing anything about it. After hearing those conversations, Henry put out a challenge and the class took him up on it.

The group will work closely with the President’s Sustainability Committee, which was responsible for the installation of the experimental green roof designed to help cut down on utilities and cooling, as well as carbon dioxide emissions. The committee also spearheaded the campaign to remove trays from the campus dining hall, a move intended to conserve water and chemicals otherwise used to wash the trays.

On campuses where sustainability is taken seriously such groups have proven effective said Jeff Howard, assistant professor and committee co-chair, in his blog.

“Students have had a major role in shaping the agenda and pushing the institution to be aggressive,” he wrote.

Earlier this year, the Princeton Review gave UTA a disappointing 60, the lowest score on its Green Rating. Henry said that with the formation of this club, steps are being taken to improve the score.

“You’ve heard that you are what you eat, but you are also what you are surrounded by,” he said. “We need to clean things up for our future generations.”

Students can contribute to the green initiative by recycling, turning off lights when they are not in use and reusing bags said Coddington, an interdisciplinary studies senior.
