There’s a new face among the volleyball team and no, it’s not another freshman signee that Coach Seymour inked to bolster an already-deep freshmen class.

Instead, Seymour brought in Texas Statse alumna Christina Melvin as the second assistant coach.

Melvin happens to be a former Southland Conference champion.

“Anytime you can get a former player from the Southland Conference, that’s a bonus,” Seymour said. “She has an idea of how the conference works and how each of the teams play.”

Melvin graduated as a two-year captain from Texas State in 2007 after collecting 494 assists and helping the Bobcats win the 2005 championship.

Prior to arriving in San Marcos, Melvin was a two-year captain at Boise State, landing on the 2003 Academic All-WAC team.

Melvin began her post-graduate career as a TV sports reporter in Sherman and decided that she enjoyed volleyball too much to just go forward.

“My first love is volleyball and I realized I wanted to get back to it,” she said. “I didn’t know where I wanted to go — then I found this and it’s like the perfect situation.”

Melvin initiated contact with UTA, letting Seymour know she was in the area and wanted to know if Seymour knew of any club volleyball or high school job openings.

While in contact with Melvin, Seymour told her, “By the way, we need a coach.”

Melvin accepted and was officially introduced as an assistant head coach on Aug. 1.

Players recognize that adding Melvin is a plus to the program and her championship experience will help the team.

Sophomore outside hitter Bianca Sauls said having Melvin on the coaching staff makes a big difference.

“She gives us feedback and she’s more like an actual coach,” Sauls said. “In our previous season, the second assistant wouldn’t really say a lot.”

While the “itch” remains on the floor and play, Melvin understands there’s a challenge for her to remain in the coaching mind-set but also to make the players better.

“It’s difficult,” she said. “I love to compete and I love to play. So when I do get to play with them, I love every second of it.
