A win's a win. Let's start of with that. But anyone watching the Mavericks take on the Cowboys of Hardin-Simmons this past Saturday had to be somewhat unimpressed with UTA's performance.

Yes, the Mavericks won by 20. Yes, five players scored in double figures led by the return of junior Brandon Long — it was good to see him back in uniform. What was worrisome is that this team allowed the Cowboys to make a game out of it early after a 16-2 HSU run to close the score to 33-27.

With all the hype and expectations surrounding this team this year, there should have been no doubt that they could have hung triple digits on the Cowboys. They're a D-III school, c'mon. There were way too many times in which the our guys seem to look for the flashy plays.

Marquez Haynes, Lamarcus Reed III and J.D. Davis can jump out of the gym, but this team need to realize the moment in the game instead of trying to make the fans get out of their seats.

Another concern could be the this team's ability to shoot from the outside and falling in love with the three. The old adage is: You Live by the 3, You Die by the 3. It'll be interesting to see if this trend continues throughout the season, because if it does, kiss any chance of a SLC title goodbye, because a more balanced offense with heavy doses of Anthony Vereen is the recipe for success.

I understand this was just the first game, so the team may be a bit rusty right now. Luckily they have the chance to work out that rust against another lesser opponent on Tuesday against Texas Wesleyan.
