Is Obama off-limits for comics? PDF Print E-mail

The New York Times
has an interesting story that's not exactly breaking news but still looks into something not talked about: the lack of Barack Obama jokes.

Talking to several staffers with the late-night talk shows, and even some of the hosts, people think Obama's too polished and, basically, hasn't really screwed up yet. Therefore, most of the jokes referring to the presidential campaign have been about John McCain's age, but Stephen Colbert's still all over "secret muslim" Obama.

Jimmy Kimmel said it's almost a form of reverse racism, where all the late-night comedians are white, with mostly-white staffs, audiences and so forth. David Alan Grier, who will soon host a sort of "black" version of "The Daily Show," if you will, said it just goes with the territory.

"It’s just like the gay comic can do gay material," Grier said.
